sensory disintegration tank
this installation explores how scale and perception shape what we accept as true. inspired by slowed-down audio, distorted speech, and manipulated visuals, the work questions how reality is presented to us. at the center is a translucent edible jelly sculpture of myself, floating in saltwater, slowly dissolving.......
the idea started when I heard a slowed-down version of u smile by justin bieber that turned it into an ambient piece. it made me think about how changing speed can completely shift meaning and perception. This led me to other examples, like the mercator map, which distorts the size of countries to reinforce eurocentric perspectives, and the red room in Twin Peaks, where speech is altered to feel unsettling.
for the sound element, I worked with palestine protest recordings, government debates, and maccabi hooligan chants. by slowing, reversing, and distorting them, i wanted to create the feeling of something that sounds clear at first but unravels when you pay closer attention, just like how media can twist narratives.
on a personal level, this piece reflects my experience as an activist. at protests, i feel physically trapped, by police kettling, by misinformation, by the sheer sensory overload of it all. the jelly figure represents that vulnerability. it’s fragile, edible, and floating in saltwater, disintegrating over time, the tension between trying to stay afloat and feeling like you’re being eaten away.
