Concept

mYrrH is a sound piece exploring sacredly disorienting spaces, memory, and ritual through field recordings and textural sound design.

Created for an Amen Break assignment, it uses field recordings from a trip to Morocco, inspired by the interplay between amen, adhan, and the heightened call to prayer during Ramadan. Walking through the winding paths of the souks, the adhan became a grounding source amidst sensory overload. Moments of silence were shared instinctively among friends, creating a collective pause in the midst of disharmony, reflecting my internal state in recent months, seeking quiet yet confronted by overwhelming stimuli, searching for something sacredly disorienting.

The soundscape incorporates fragrances and textures of Morocco, particularly frankincense, amber, and myrrh, alongside domestic recordings for textural depth, the Amen Break sampled subtly to form a hidden rhythmic backbone.

The Wren Boys

Concept

The Wren Boys is a sound piece created for an assignment exploring silence and cultural memory. It uses field recordings from a trip to my hometown in Ireland, combining the traditional music of the Wren Boys, a Christmas ritual in rural Ireland where musicians travel house to house, with environmental sounds from the local Christmas swim, including water and machinery.

The piece reflects the tension between communal celebration and personal solitude, capturing a moment of unexpected isolation when a close friend could not join the trip. The juxtaposition of ritual sounds and natural textures creates a layered auditory experience, evoking both nostalgia and disorientation, and highlighting the quiet spaces within sound and memory.
